Understanding Obesity
Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is about more than appearance—it reduces your risk of diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease and many other chronic medical conditions.
Obesity is now recognised as a chronic medical condition rather than simply a lifestyle issue. It is influenced by many factors, including genetics, hormones, appetite regulation, environment and daily habits.

Benefits of Losing Weight
You may benefit from a medical weight management programme if you:
- Have difficulty losing weight despite making sustained changes to your diet and physical activity.
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the overweight or obese range.
- Have obesity-related medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease or obstructive sleep apnoea.
- Have experienced repeated weight regain after previous attempts to lose weight.
- Are looking for a medically supervised and personalised approach to long-term weight management.
Who Is Suitable for Weight Loss Medication?
Weight loss medications should only be prescribed after a medical assessment.
In Singapore, medications such as Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are generally prescribed according to their approved licensing criteria.
In general, treatment may be considered for adults who:
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or above
- Have a BMI of 27 kg/m² or above together with weight-related medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or obstructive sleep apnoea.
During your consultation, we will review your medical history, current medications, lifestyle and weight loss goals before discussing whether medical treatment is appropriate for you.
Understanding BMI in Asians
Asian populations develop obesity-related health risks at lower BMI levels than Western populations.
In Singapore, the Ministry of Health and the Health Promotion Board use lower BMI cut-offs when assessing overweight and obesity in Asian adults. These cut-offs help identify individuals who may benefit from earlier lifestyle intervention and medical assessment.
During your consultation, we will assess your overall health profile rather than relying on BMI alone.
BMI Categories for Asian Adults
🟢 Healthy Weight
BMI: 18.5–22.9
🟡 Overweight
BMI: 23.0–27.4
🔴 Obesity
BMI: ≥27.5

Evidence-Based Weight Loss Medications
At GreenLink Medical Clinic, we prescribe evidence-based weight-loss medications when appropriate.
During your consultation, we will recommend the option that best suits your medical history, lifestyle and goals.
Modern weight-loss medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking natural hormones that help regulate appetite, increase feelings of fullness and slow stomach emptying.
This helps many people eat less and achieve sustainable weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes.
Compare Wegovy® and Mounjaro®
Both Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are effective once-weekly prescription medications for weight management. While they work differently, both can help achieve significant and sustained weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

What to Expect Over Time
Weight loss with these medications is gradual and steady.
Every patient’s journey is different, but most people follow a similar pattern during treatment.
Here is a general timeline:
🟢 Month 1
You may notice reduced appetite.
Mild side effects are common as your body adjusts.
Weight loss may be modest at this stage.
🟢 Month 2
Most early side effects begin to improve.
Weight loss begins to become noticeable.
Energy levels often improve.
🟢 Month 3
Weight loss often becomes more noticeable.
Blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels may start to improve.
🟢 Month 4
Continued steady weight loss.
Maximum benefit is usually seen around 12+ months of treatment.
🟢 Beyond Month 4
Most patients continue treatment with regular reviews.
Weight loss generally continues gradually,
with the greatest improvements often seen between 3 and 12 months.
Getting the Best Results
These medications work best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. They are powerful tools — but not a complete replacement for diet and exercise.
🥗 Diet Tips
• Eat regular, balanced meals
• Focus on protein (meat, fish, eggs, legumes) to preserve muscle
• Reduce ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks
• Increase vegetables, fruits, and wholegrains
• Eat slowly — your fullness signals are slower than usual
🏃 Exercise Tips
• Aim for 150 mins of moderate activity per week
• Include resistance/strength training to protect muscle
• Start gently if you are not used to exercising
• Walking is a great starting point
• Exercise also improves mood and energy levels
Common Side Effects (Usually Temporary)
Most side effects are related to the gut and are usually mild and temporary — especially during the dose-increase phase. They tend to improve after a few weeks.
• Nausea — most common, especially at the start
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea or constipation
• Reduced appetite (this is actually part of how the medicine works!)
• Burping or bloating
• Tiredness
Tips to Reduce Side Effects
• Eat smaller, more frequent meals
• Avoid fatty, fried, or very rich foods
• Eat slowly and chew your food well
• Stay well hydrated — sip water throughout the day
• Avoid lying down right after eating
• Do not skip meals — eating nothing can make nausea worse

💉Wegovy® (Semaglutide)
How it works:
Semaglutide mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1).
This hormone is released after meals and signals to your brain that you are full. It also slows stomach emptying, so you feel satisfied for longer, and helps keep blood sugar levels stable.
What to expect:
- Once-weekly injection under the skin (tummy, thigh, or upper arm)
- Dose is gradually increased over several months to reduce side effects
- Average weight loss of around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks
- Reduces visceral fat (dangerous fat stored around internal organs) as well as overall body fat
💉 Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide)
How it works:
Tirzepatide is a dual-action medication — it activates two hormones at the same time: GLP-1 (like semaglutide) and GIP (Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). This combination works more powerfully on hunger, metabolism, and fat storage than GLP-1 alone.
What to expect:
- Once-weekly injection under the skin (tummy, thigh, or upper arm)
- Dose is gradually increased over several months to reduce side effects
- Average weight loss of 20–22% of body weight
- Particularly effective at reducing dangerous fat around the organs (visceral fat) and under the skin (subcutaneous fat)
Additional benefit — Visceral and Subcutaneous Fat:
Both medications reduce visceral fat — but tirzepatide’s additional GIP action appears to target fat tissue more powerfully, particularly fat stored around the organs (visceral fat) and under the skin (subcutaneous fat), resulting in greater overall fat loss relative to weight lost.
Additional benefit — Fatty Liver Disease:
Tirzepatide has shown particularly strong benefits for patients with fatty liver disease (also called NAFLD — Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease).
It helps reduce fat stored in the liver, lowers liver inflammation, and may help reverse early liver scarring. If your doctor has told you that you have a fatty liver, this medication may be especially beneficial for you.
