How Does Acne Develop?
Acne is a condition affecting the hair follicles and the oil (sebaceous) glands of the skin. It is one of the most common skin conditions and is often referred to simply as pimples.
The sebaceous glands normally produce sebum, an oily substance that keeps the skin healthy. When excess sebum combines with dead skin cells, the pores become blocked.
This creates the perfect environment for bacteria that naturally live on the skin—particularly Cutibacterium acnes (previously known as Propionibacterium acnes)—to multiply.
The blocked pore becomes inflamed, leading to the redness, swelling and pus that we recognise as acne.
In Simple Terms
Acne develops when the tiny openings of the skin (hair follicles) become blocked by excess oil and dead skin cells.
Bacteria naturally present on the skin (Cutibacterium acnes) can then multiply inside the blocked pore, causing inflammation.
This leads to the familiar red pimples, whiteheads and painful cysts seen in acne.
